As I walked through and took in the history of the khmer Rouge, the atrocities of Pol Pot, the gravity of true evil in the world, I cannot help but feel a sense of wrath. I feel a pure hatred of all that stands to represent such evil, and a resolve to take action, eradicate and remove it from the planet. I also stand helpless before it as I see countless unidentified faces of victims, once living souls with ambitions, dreams, and opportunity to change lives(including their own).
The reality is heavy on my heart, I cannot, humanity cannot combat true evil.
Man can only subside the faces of those that embrace it, man can only memorialize its devastion, but no matter what man finds to do it cannot combat evil.
Where to Start? I asked this within my boiling rage. What can I do to change Evil? Within my heart a even harder truth settled as I realized my hands and my mind have the capacity to carry out this level of evil. Try as I may I cannot help but see what is said of a heart apart fom Christ. It is a heart wicked in its core that unless it’s tempered by God (either by law or by grace)will carry out atrocities. But even the law falls short of suppressing evil within man, we see this as men in history bear faces symbolizing true evil.
Where can one go to eradicate evil but God alone?
Rom 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. 12:20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good
How do I swallow this when in my heart I feel a need for radical justice? There is a story out of this dark chapter of history that is difficult even for me to grasp. It is the story of Duch a man who was instrumental to the killings, torture, and oppression of the cambodian people during the Khmer Rouge. The story ends with him as a christian, repenting in court of the crimes and paying the consequence of law for those crimes.
God redeemed him? A man who was responsible for countless men, women and children’s destruction, forgiven by God. A face bearing weight of such evil, forgiven by God? YES, that is the mercy of my God!
The truth is, God through Christ redeemed ALL who will accept Him. On the cross there was a justice served that forgives man of any and all sin. At least all men who accept it.
But what about evil, it still persist I saw a memorial of it today?
Rev 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away
There is a coming hope, Vengeance is truly God’s, justice will be executed purely with complete integrity. Realize evil is beyond men, it is beyond what we see, touch and feel. It is spiritual and will be ultimately dealt with by God alone.
Job 27:13 This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty. 14 If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. 15 Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep. 16 Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; 17 He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. 18 He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper maketh. 19 The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not. 20 Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night. 21 The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place. 22 For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand. 23 Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place
Is this a lie? History as our teacher reveals this is indeed true. All that is left of many oppressors is a memorial recognizing their victims as the heros. The mention of their names brings that hiss from men and women and their heritage will forever be tainted by the evil that they embraced without repentance.
Where to start when it comes to evil? Go to God, believe in Christ, ask for redemption from sin. Know the spirit of evil will be utterly destroyed, know you can live now with a peace that will prevail even in the presence of evil.
Be Transformed to his way, let God be the judge, recieve redemption, learn righteousness and worship God.
